CHAMPIONS

 –

Since Antiquity, sport has found a magnified expression in art. Through the representation of the perfect gesture, physical achievement, and the ritualization of combat, the artist reveals the human of his time. Sport is a major theme for the four artists in this exhibition, and that is why each interprets it spontaneously, with their own personality.

Brian Lotti, a skateboarder enshrined in the pantheon of pioneers of the discipline, has developed an original painting technique on paper that captures the dynamic of movement. Street basketball becomes a whirlwind of colors, and the televised image of tennis, so familiar to enthusiasts, eternally freezes the epic confrontation of champions.

Jean Jullien, for his part, highlights nature’s grandeur – the sea, the sky, the coast – giving surfing a mystical dimension. Beauty lies in the harmony between man and the sea, an existential message in the form of escapism.

Rhys Lee paints the theatricality of boxing in a bath of vibrant light. Only the silhouette of a boxer posing for the promotion of his fight appears. The contemporary gladiator stands ready.

Parra, who was once a professional skateboarder, distills the essence of movement in a perfect pose that an intense discipline makes natural. This harmonious bodily mechanic articulates the geometric composition of the work. The piece pays homage to strength and agility.

Four artists, four perspectives on sport, four mirrors of our human condition, both beautiful and complex.
