Alice Gallery is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition of Australian artist Rhys Lee (1975) in Belgium. The boxer takes the spotlight in the new series of artworks to be discovered. He symbolizes the virtue of tenacity in the face of adversity, a fitting metaphor to depict the ordinary struggle of some. The other depicted characters also strike a pose before the painter with a certain theatricality. The uniqueness of Rhys Lee’s brushstroke is striking: Intense oil colors compose the painting with wild energy. One instantly thinks of the expressionist style. And while, as with all works, the temptation is great to perceive a touch of Picasso’s genius in one or the impetuosity of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner in another, in the end, Rhys Lee delivers the knockout blow. The austral pictorial expressionism has already caught the eye of some Brussels residents in recent years through collective exhibitions at the gallery or the one on anthropomorphism in 2020 at MIMA called ZOO.

La galerie Alice a le plaisir d’annoncer notre premier solo show de l’artiste australien Rhys Lee (1975). Le boxeur est la figure à l’honneur dans la nouvelle série d’œuvres à découvrir. Il symbolise la vertu de la pugnacité face à l’adversité, une métaphore toute désignée pour dépeindre le combat ordinaire de certains. Les autres personnages représentés prennent aussi la pause face au peintre avec une certaine théâtralité. Le coup de brosse chez Rhys Lee saute aux yeux : Les couleurs intenses de l’huile composent le tableau avec une énergie sauvage. On pense instantanément à un style expressionniste. Et si, comme pour toutes les œuvres, la tentation est grande de percevoir dans celle-ci une touche du génie de Picasso ou dans celle-là l’impétuosité d’un Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, au final le K.O. vous est mis par Rhys Lee. L’expressionnisme pictural australe a déjà frappé le regard de certains Bruxellois ces dernières années à l’occasion d’expositions collectives à la Galerie ou celle sur l’anthropomorphisme en 2020 au MIMA appelée ZOO.
