STOLEN MOMENTS

 –

Hi

Thinking the title Stolen Moments could be fitting. Has a nice poetic ring that includes and suggests many things.

Stolen Moments can work on a few levels.... Capturing the light and color at a given moment, specific times of action in sports scenes, times of getting away from our daily routines, and instances of observation or a kind of voyeurism where scenes are recorded and celebrated often without people`s permission but definitely with better intentions in mind.

Stolen Moments refers to that time of day of getting away and getting to the park, or getting a game in....sneaking some leisure time in. There are also moments during games when someone makes a break and steals a basket or makes an unexpected play on the tennis court.

And finally, Stolen Moments refers to my process of going to parks, cafe's, b-ball courts, wherever.... and playing like the fly on the wall and observing situations, sketching, taking photos, etc. - snatching glimpses, doing studies to "preserve" or harvest a scene or the makings of a scene for fuller realization in the studio.

The painter Alice Neel once said she painted people for the sake of Art. Her mission was to faithfully record and express the nature of her subjects for the sake of Art.... and Art in the largest sense of humanity, culture, and posterity.

In similar ways I find myself at times straddling the line between participant and voyeur, and have a working train of thought where I dedicate that the subjects, the people in my paintings, may be elevated or contribute to expanding culture by being included in the work. Pointing out / affirming / acknowledging the better aspects of our shared experience.

Stolen Moments seems pretty fitting and can cover sports stuff as well as figurative moments of leisure.

Best,
Brian
