The studio of Sune Christiansen (1976) in Copenhagen sits next to his wife Lærke Bagger’s studio, renowned for her original textile creations. Spacious and filled with light, oil pastels scattered across the floor alongside drawings, jars of acrylic and industrial paints gathered on a trolley, canvases covering the walls… the studio reflects his painting: a frontal, luminous tumult where raw, textured forms collide, where abstraction flirts with figuration, and where colour creates contrast. This pared-down pictorial language carries a primitive expressive force, erupting from the chaos of the universe. 

Sune’s ceramics seem to have been extracted directly from his paintings. Some possess a curiously totemic presence, while others evoke a form of anthropomorphic hallucination. 

Here again, abstraction opens the way to a sensual, instinctive rapture — that moment when poetry tears the mind, for an instant, from its routine and carries it toward a meditative elsewhere. The Danish artist’s work draws on the shaman’s telluric forces to connect with the invisible powers of our imagination. 

For the past few years, Sune led a double life: art director by day, painter by night. Then, in 2021, later in life — as is often the case with self-taught artists — his work left the studio and stepped into the light of the gallery. New to the market yet mature in his practice, exhibitions quickly followed across Europe and the United States for this artist recently emerged from the shadows.
