Born in 1978, Kimberley, British Columbia, Canada. Lives and works in Barcelona. Micheal Swaney is a Canadian artist based out of Barcelona, he studied Fine Art foundations at University of Victoria before graduating with a degree in Illustration and Design from Vancouver’s Capilano University in 2000. Exhibiting internationally since 2004, he has since displayed his work across North America and Europe. Mike Swaney’s work, made of paper collages, paintings and videos, recall an imaginary everyday life inspired by childhood. His playful interpretation of reality opens your eyes onto the plastic language itself. His style is a mixture of geometrical shapes and dream like abstract lines. In his 3D, performance sculpture and video work, the naïve approach conjugates with the absurdity of the subject and the formal experimentation. Mike Swaney creates a singular universe where the childish spirit of the viewer wanders. The art requires a lot of attention before all of the elements fully sink in. Hidden in Swaney’s nervous line drawings and surreal collages is an attention to detail, and a beauty, some might at first miss.
